TORUN (DA) — Taymir Burnet finished sixth in the men’s 60 meters at the world indoor championships, becoming the first Dutch man to reach the event final.
Burnet, 33, ran 6.61 in the final and finished well behind champion Jordan Anthony of the United States, who won in 6.41. Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson and American Trayvon Bromell both clocked 6.45.
Burnet advanced to the final earlier in the day with a time of 6.553, officially recorded to the thousandth after he crossed exactly level with Belgium’s Simon Verherstraeten. Both advanced as joint runners-up from their heat.
He said he expected more from the final after arriving with hopes of reaching the podium.
“Not a very good time, I expected better,” Burnet said after the race. “I came here hoping for a final, to fight for a medal. It’s a shame it went worse in the final.”
Still, Burnet said the race gave him confidence heading into the outdoor season.
“I know now that my first 60 meters are good, and from there I can start building toward the outdoor season,” he said.
Burnet has already won relay medals outdoors in both the 4×100 and 4×400. At last year’s world athletics championships in Tokyo, he took bronze in the 4×100 alongside Elvis Afrifa, Nsikak Ekpo and Xavi Mo-Ajok.
