Court of Appeal postpones Schoop detention in firearms case

WILLEMSTAD (DA) — A Curaçao Court of Appeal panel has postponed the continued detention of professional baseball player Jonathan Schoop after agreeing with Schoop’s attorney in a closed-door hearing.

The court found Schoop’s personal and private circumstances carried more weight and said there were no serious grounds to keep him in detention. Schoop remains a suspect as the investigation continues.

Curaçao police searched Schoop’s home on Jan. 29 during a large operation that began late Wednesday night into early Thursday, when police conducted a search of the suspects at a food truck and later continued at Schoop’s home.

Police detained nine people in the case and seized multiple firearms, ammunition and related items.

Schoop’s wife was also detained that day, but her detention was suspended on Feb. 11. Four other people have also been released in the case.

Since the arrests, authorities have released limited information about the investigation, and there has still been no indication of what role, if any, Schoop has in the case.
