Nicky Hayen’s firing could give Shurandy Sambo a fresh chance at Burnley

BURNLEY (DA) — Burnley fired head coach Nicky Hayen on Saturday after a 4-1 defeat at Lincoln City, a change that could bring renewed consideration for Curaçao international Shurandy Sambo after his exclusion from the club’s registered Championship squad.

The club cited its disappointing start to the season in announcing Hayen’s immediate dismissal. Burnley had won just one of its opening 12 league games and stood 22nd in the Championship.

For Sambo, the potential opening is a new coach reconsidering his place in the team’s plans. The 25-year-old right back was omitted from the league squad published in September and remained among the unregistered players ahead of the Lincoln match, according to reports. Any improvement in his prospects would depend on the incoming coach’s assessment and the club’s registration decisions.

There is a route for an omitted player to become eligible before the January transfer window. EFL regulations allow clubs with space below the squad limit to seek permission to add an existing player outside a transfer window. Burnley initially submitted 24 names against the Championship’s maximum of 25.

A fresh opportunity for Sambo would therefore require Burnley to secure his inclusion on the league list before he could compete for a place in a Championship matchday squad. Hayen’s departure alone leaves that registration requirement in place.

Despite his lack of club playing time, Sambo featured in all four of Curaçao’s recent Nations League matches. He played 90 minutes against Costa Rica, 45 against Nicaragua and 90 in the home victory over Trinidad and Tobago before starting the return match against Trinidad and Tobago.
