Eloy Room’s late penalty save preserves Miami FC draw after Jürgen Locadia scores

MIAMI (DA) — Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room saved a penalty deep into second-half stoppage time to preserve Miami FC’s 2-2 draw against Detroit City FC on Saturday night at South Dade Kia Field at Pitbull Stadium.

Chisom Egbuchulam had an opportunity to win the match for Detroit after Tommy Musto was called for a handball inside the penalty area in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Room denied Egbuchulam’s right-footed attempt with a diving save to his left.

Curaçao international Jürgen Locadia scored Miami’s first goal in the 55th minute, finishing from close range after an assist from Rodrigo da Costa to tie the match at 1-1.

Gerald Díaz completed Miami’s comeback in the 64th minute, converting Alessandro Milesi’s pass with a right-footed shot into the top-right corner.

Miami remained ahead until the 89th minute, when substitute Tommy Silva met Kobe Hernández-Foster’s cross and scored from the left side of the six-yard box to level the match.

Maxi Rodriguez had given Detroit City the lead in the 34th minute, finishing a fast break set up by Alexander Dalou.

Room also made several important saves before his decisive penalty stop, denying Darren Smith in the first half, Abdoulaye Diop shortly before halftime and Dalou in the 74th minute.

Locadia played the full match and received a yellow card in the 62nd minute. Miami finished with one point after surrendering its late lead but avoided defeat through Room’s stoppage-time intervention.
