HOUSTON (DA) — Curaçao’s first FIFA World Cup match will come against one of the tournament’s most decorated nations, when the Blue Wave face Germany in the Group E opener June 14 at Houston Stadium.
The matchup will be historic before the ball is kicked. Curaçao and Germany have never met in a FIFA World Cup match or in any senior “A” international.
Germany enters with one of the biggest World Cup résumés in the sport. The 2026 tournament will be Germany’s 21st World Cup appearance, more than any other European nation, and its 19th consecutive trip to the tournament.
Germany has won the World Cup four times, in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014, and has reached the final eight times.
Curaçao enters from a completely different place. The Blue Wave are making their World Cup debut after becoming the smallest nation ever to qualify for the tournament.
Curaçao reached the World Cup without losing in CONCACAF qualifying, finishing with seven wins and three draws in 10 matches. The team sealed its place with a 0-0 draw away to Jamaica on the final matchday.
That contrast makes the head-to-head simple but striking. Germany has played 112 World Cup matches, with 68 wins, 21 draws and 23 losses. Curaçao has never played a World Cup match.
Germany also has a strong record against CONCACAF teams at the World Cup, with seven wins, one draw and one loss in nine matches. The only defeat came against Mexico in 2018.
Still, Germany arrives with pressure. Since winning the 2014 World Cup, it has gone out in the group stage in back-to-back tournaments, in 2018 and 2022. Before 2018, Germany had failed to advance beyond the first round only once, in 1938.
Curaçao arrives with no World Cup history, but also no World Cup baggage. Its record at the tournament begins in Houston.
The coaching matchup adds another major storyline. Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann, 38, is the youngest head coach at the 2026 World Cup. Curaçao coach Dick Advocaat, 78, is the oldest.
The 40-year gap between them is the largest ever between two head coaches in a World Cup match. Advocaat will become the oldest coach in World Cup history when Curaçao face Germany.
There is also a direct club connection between the teams. Curaçao defender Joshua Brenet played under Nagelsmann at Hoffenheim during the 2018-19 Bundesliga season.
Germany will be trying to avoid another slow World Cup start after losing its opening match in each of the last two tournaments. Curaçao will be trying to make its first World Cup match another defining moment in the biggest football story the island has ever lived.
