Albies’ career-best hitting streak ends as Braves fall to Mariners

SEATTLE (DA) — Ozzie Albies’ career-best hitting streak ended at 17 games as the Atlanta Braves lost 3-1 to the Seattle Mariners.

Albies went 0 for 3 with a walk and a strikeout, ending the longest hitting streak of his career and the longest by a Braves player since Austin Riley hit in 18 straight games in July 2022.

The Curaçao second baseman entered the game after extending the streak with a single to center field the night before. During the run, Albies batted .400 with 26 hits, 16 runs, 14 RBIs and 11 extra-base hits.

Seattle held Atlanta to one run on four hits. The Braves were scoreless until the eighth inning, when they pushed across their only run, but the Mariners answered in the bottom half and closed out the win.

Bryan Woo earned the victory for Seattle, improving to 2-2 with a 4.02 ERA. Michael Pérez took the loss for Atlanta, falling to 2-2 with a 2.38 ERA. Andrés Muñoz Ferrer recorded his second save.

Albies remained one of Atlanta’s most productive hitters despite the hitless night, carrying a .322 average and .915 OPS after the game. He had been one of the top offensive second basemen in baseball, entering the matchup tied among MLB leaders in hits and ranking near the top in total bases and runs.

The Braves finished with four hits and struck out 12 times. Drake Baldwin, Mauricio Dubón, Mike Yastrzemski and Sean Murphy had Atlanta’s hits.

Seattle finished with nine hits. Cole Young went 3 for 4 with an RBI, while Julio Rodríguez drove in a run and scored once. Luis Pereda added two hits and scored a run.

The loss dropped Atlanta to 26-12, still first in the NL East. Seattle improved to 18-20 and remained second in the AL West.
