MIAMI (DA) — The 2027 Gold Cup will abandon four-team groups and give every participant four matches in the opening round under a new format announced Thursday by CONCACAF.
The 16-team tournament will run from June 17 to July 11, 2027, with the draw scheduled for April 8.
Curaçao’s upcoming Nations League quarterfinal series against Panama offers a route into the competition, with a Gold Cup berth and a place in the Nations League Final Four at stake.
Under the revised system, the Gold Cup’s two groups will each contain eight teams. The top four in each standings table will reach the quarterfinals, although teams will face only four opponents within their group.
Rankings will shape both the draw and the schedule. CONCACAF will divide the participants into eight pots of two teams, sending one team from each pot into each group.
Each group will then be separated into four ranking bands. A predetermined fixture matrix will assign every team one opponent from each band, providing a mix of opposition without requiring a full round-robin schedule.
CONCACAF said the change is intended to produce more meetings between leading teams earlier in the tournament.
Group finishes will determine the quarterfinal pairings, with higher-placed teams facing lower-placed opponents. A fixed bracket will establish the semifinal matchups. All three knockout rounds will consist of single-match ties.
Eight CONCACAF teams will qualify directly through the Nations League in November 2026. Another seven will earn places through the Gold Cup preliminary round in March 2027, completing the field alongside guest nation Saudi Arabia.
Group play is scheduled for June 17-30. The quarterfinals will follow July 3-4, with the semifinals July 7-8 and the final July 11.
Host venues, ticket information and the full match schedule will be announced later.
