Cherrion Valerius set for permanent Minnesota United move

ST. PAUL (DA) — Cherrion Valerius is set to remain with Minnesota United after his starting appearance in Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City activated a mandatory purchase clause, according to reports.

The 21-year-old defender will reportedly be under contract with the MLS club through mid-2030. Minnesota initially signed him on loan from NAC Breda in September.

Valerius, who was called up by Curaçao in September 2024 for the CONCACAF Nations League, played the full match at Allianz Field. Minnesota recovered from a 1-0 halftime deficit to win with three second-half goals.

NAC is due a transfer fee, according to reports. The Dutch club’s proceeds also include the loan fee, with bonuses potentially increasing the total.

When announcing the loan, NAC said Minnesota would be required to complete the permanent transfer in January 2027 if specified sporting conditions were met. The agreement also included a bonus and a percentage of a future sale.

Valerius joined NAC’s academy from Rotterdam club Spartaan’20 for the 2019-20 season. He made 50 first-team appearances for NAC before leaving for Minnesota, including 43 in the Eredivisie.
