WILLEMSTAD (DA) — Arsenal U-21 midfielder Demiane Agustien, who has already been approached about representing Curaçao, is also attracting interest from Indonesia as uncertainty continues over his senior international future.
The 19-year-old has been linked with Indonesia following comments by national team coach John Herdman, who confirmed he is working to recruit two players of Indonesian descent to strengthen his squad.
Herdman said he is looking for quick, dynamic players who can operate on the wings. He also acknowledged that some of his potential recruits have other international options, including the Netherlands and Curaçao.
Although Herdman did not identify the two players, Agustien has been mentioned in reports in Indonesia as a possible target.
Curaçao’s interest was confirmed Sept. 21, when national team coach Dick Advocaat revealed that Agustien was among several players contacted about joining the Blue Wave.
Advocaat also identified Ro-Zangelo Daal and Elijah Dijkstra, explaining that the players preferred to keep their options open while waiting to see whether opportunities with the Netherlands would materialize.
Agustien’s connection to Curaçao comes through his father, Kemy Agustien, a former Curaçao international who played professionally for clubs including Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Brighton.
Demiane has already represented Curaçao at the U-17 level. He subsequently played for the Netherlands U-18 and U-19 national teams.
His Indonesian connection comes from his mother’s side of the family. Agustien has previously explained that both his maternal grandmother and great-grandmother were born in Jakarta.
That family background provides a potential pathway to represent Indonesia, although any move would require him to meet Indonesian citizenship requirements and FIFA’s international eligibility rules.
Born in the Netherlands, Agustien joined Arsenal from Derby County in July 2025. The attacking midfielder scored five goals in 24 academy appearances during the 2025-26 season and has also been involved with Arsenal’s first-team preseason preparations.
With Curaçao having already made contact and Indonesia expressing interest in players matching his profile, Agustien remains a potential option for both national teams.
No commitment to either country has been confirmed, leaving his senior international future undecided.
