Huddersfield Town show interest in Curaçao international Ar’Jany Martha

HUDDERSFIELD (DA) — Huddersfield Town have shown interest in signing Curaçao international Ar’Jany Martha from Rotherham United, according to sources.

No agreement has been reached, but a move to Huddersfield would allow the 22-year-old to remain in League One after Rotherham’s relegation to League Two at the end of the 2025-26 season.

Martha joined Rotherham from Belgian club Beerschot in July 2025, signing a three-year contract. The versatile left-sided player made 41 league appearances and scored once during his first season with the Millers.

Rotherham finished 23rd in the 24-team League One standings. Their relegation was confirmed following a 3-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic on April 14, sending the club into England’s fourth tier for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

Huddersfield finished ninth and retained its place in League One, the third level of English soccer. The Terriers recorded 18 victories, 13 draws and 15 defeats across their 46 league matches.

The English league system is organized as a pyramid. The Premier League is the first tier, followed by the EFL Championship in the second tier, League One in the third and League Two in the fourth. The National League begins the country’s largely nonleague structure at the fifth level.

Clubs move between divisions through promotion and relegation. In League One, the top two teams earn automatic promotion to the Championship, while teams finishing third through sixth compete in the playoffs for the final promotion place. The bottom four are relegated to League Two.

The top three League Two clubs are promoted automatically, with teams finishing fourth through seventh contesting a playoff for another place in League One. The bottom two League Two teams are relegated to the National League.

For Martha, a transfer from Rotherham to Huddersfield would therefore represent a move one level higher within the English pyramid following the Millers’ relegation.
