Inter Willemstad exits CFU Club Shield after penalty shootout loss to Delfines del Este

COUVA (DA) — Curaçao champion CVV Inter Willemstad was eliminated from the 2026 CFU Club Shield after falling 6-5 on penalties to Delfines del Este FC following a 1-1 quarterfinal draw Tuesday at Ato Boldon Stadium.

Delfines converted six of its seven penalties, while Inter scored five times in the shootout. The Dominican Republic club advanced to face Puerto Rico’s Metropolitan FA in the semifinals.

Delfines took the lead in the 36th minute after Daniel Rosa lost possession deep inside Inter’s half. Emmanuel Gomez collected the ball, rounded goalkeeper Nasser Lahham and finished into the empty net.

Inter responded eight minutes after halftime. Quinton Christina’s cross was only partially cleared, allowing Ruensly Leuteria to drive a low shot into the bottom-left corner for the equalizer.

Leuteria had also threatened during the opening half when he created space outside the penalty area but sent his attempt narrowly over the crossbar. Davidson Rosa later had a close-range effort saved by Delfines goalkeeper Pedro Espinal Almonte.

Espinal Almonte made another important intervention in the 60th minute, racing off his line to stop Davidson Rosa after the Inter attacker broke behind the defense.

Delfines nearly found a winner in second-half stoppage time, but Lahham collected Eduar Gonzalez’s dangerous cross to keep the match level and send the quarterfinal to penalties.

Jerensley Martina, Darwin Lourens, Mirco Colina, Leuteria and Andruw Stokkel converted their penalties for Inter. Eduar Gonzalez, Jhon Ramos Matta, Darlyn Valerio, Alvaro Cabrera Guzman, Esmailin Segura De Leon and Renzo Sala Batista scored for Delfines.

The defeat ended Inter Willemstad’s campaign after the Curaçao club reached the quarterfinals with a 5-2 victory over St. John’s SC.
