DETROIT (DA) — Curaçao’s Kenley Jansen moved into sole possession of third place on Major League Baseball’s all-time saves list on April 14, earning career save No. 479 as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 2-1 at Comerica Park.
Jansen worked the ninth inning for his third save of the season. He allowed one hit and kept Detroit’s one-run lead intact.
The Tigers scored twice in the eighth inning after trailing 1-0. Kansas City had taken the lead in the second, and both clubs finished with four hits. Dillon Dingler was credited with an RBI for Detroit.
Jansen had tied Lee Smith for third all-time with his 478th save on April 10 against Miami. With No. 479, he now trails only Mariano Rivera, who finished with 652 saves, and Trevor Hoffman, who had 601.
Detroit signed the four-time All-Star to a one-year contract on Dec. 17, 2025. He entered this season after going 5-4 with 29 saves and a 2.59 ERA in 62 relief appearances for the Los Angeles Angels last year.
