Dominican Republic overwhelms Netherlands 12-1 as Gregorius supplies lone Dutch run

MIAMI (DA) — The Dominican Republic rolled past the Kingdom of the Netherlands 12-1 in a seven-inning Pool D game Sunday at loanDepot park, breaking it open with a six-run fifth inning and finishing with 12 runs on eight hits.

The Netherlands managed just one run, a second-inning solo homer by Didi Gregorius off Luis Severino. The Dutch finished with five hits, went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position and struck out 11 times.

Ozzie Albies, Druw Jones, Juremi Profar and Ray-Patrick Didder added one hit apiece for the Netherlands. Xander Bogaerts drew the team’s only walk.

The Dominican Republic’s lineup did damage throughout the order. Junior Caminero went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Juan Soto scored twice and drove in two, and Ketel Marte crossed the plate three times while drawing three walks.

Caminero, Guerrero Jr., Austin Wells and Soto all homered. Caminero and Wells both went deep in the decisive fifth inning, when the Dominican Republic scored six times to turn a 4-1 game into a rout.

Arij Fransen took the loss after allowing three earned runs in two innings for the Netherlands. Wendell Floranus was charged with five earned runs while recording one out, and Dutch pitchers issued 11 walks in the game.

Severino worked four innings for the win, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Albert Abreu followed with two scoreless innings, and Abner Uribe closed it out in the seventh.

The Dominican Republic moved to 2-0 and into first place in Pool D. The Netherlands dropped to 1-2 and sat third in the group.

The Netherlands will return to Pool D play Tuesday against Israel at 7 p.m. ET.
