CHIHUAHUA (DA) — Jonathan Schoop is headed to Dorados de Chihuahua, with the former major league infielder set to play his third season in the Mexican League after the club added another proven power bat to its lineup.
The Curaçao-born infielder brings 11 seasons of major league experience after previous stints with the Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers.
Across 1,188 big league games, Schoop hit .254 with 174 home runs, 544 RBIs, more than 1,000 hits and 557 runs scored. He reached double digits in home runs in nine of his 11 major league seasons.
His best run-producing year came in 2017, when he drove in 105 runs. He also plated 84 runs in 2021.
Schoop last appeared in the majors on July 6, 2023, in Detroit’s game against Oakland.
He has stayed productive in Mexico with Algodoneros de Unión Laguna over the last two seasons. In 2024, he hit 15 home runs and drove in 60 runs in 81 games, and in 2025 he again hit 15 homers, added 64 RBIs and posted a .280 batting average in 91 games.
The move gives Dorados an experienced bat as the club continues to reshape its roster with veteran additions for the 2026 campaign.
Schoop’s return to the field also comes after a difficult offseason away from baseball. Earlier this year, police in Curaçao searched his home during a broader operation, and authorities later released limited information about the investigation while providing no indication of what role, if any, he had in the case.
A court later postponed Schoop’s detention in the matter, which became a major backdrop to his winter.
The legal situation also kept him from joining the Kingdom of the Netherlands roster for the World Baseball Classic after he had been expected to be part of the team.
Now, Schoop’s next chapter will begin in Chihuahua, where Dorados are betting his power and experience can strengthen the middle of the lineup.
