Cardinals land ambidextrous prospect Jurrangelo Cijntje in three-team swap that ships Donovan out

ST. LOUIS (DA) — The St. Louis Cardinals acquired right-hander Jurrangelo Cijntje in a three-team trade with the Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, sending All-Star infielder Brendan Donovan to Seattle.

Cardinals President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom said the deal adds “promising young players” to the organization’s pipeline, citing athleticism and upside, along with additional draft capital in the 2026 draft.

Cijntje, 22, was a first-round pick (15th overall) by Seattle out of Mississippi State University in the 2024 MLB Draft. An ambidextrous pitcher, he entered the 2026 season ranked as the Mariners’ No. 7 prospect by Baseball America.

In his first professional season, Cijntje went 5-7 with a 3.99 ERA in 26 appearances, including 23 starts, and advanced as high as Double-A Arkansas.

Born in Gravenhage, Netherlands, Cijntje later moved to Curaçao, where he played baseball and represented the island at the 2016 Little League World Series. His father, Mechangelo, played professionally as a catcher in the Netherlands.
