WILLEMSTAD (DA) — Curaçao police searched the home of ex-MLB player Jonathan Schoop, 34, on Thursday as part of a broader firearms-ordinance investigation, authorities said.
The search was part of a large police operation that began late Wednesday night into early Thursday, when police conducted a search of the suspects at a food truck and later continued at the home of Schoop.
Authorities said nine people were detained Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026. They said firearms and related items were seized, including ammunition, cartridges, casings and holsters. The prosecutor’s office said it could not provide additional information at this time because the investigation is ongoing, and authorities have released few details beyond confirming the detentions and seizures.
A judge later extended the detention of all suspects who were taken into custody in the late-night operation. The extension is valid for eight days. A woman detained in the operation was released and allowed to return home.
To this point, it has not been clear what role, if any, Schoop has in the investigation.
Schoop played in Major League Baseball from 2013 to 2023 for the Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers. He has also played for the Netherlands at international tournaments.
Schoop is expected to be on the list of players for the World Baseball Classic in March with the Netherlands’ Kingdom Team. The selection is expected to be announced next week, but Schoop’s selection is now uncertain and may be unlikely. The Kingdom Team is in Group D with Venezuela, Nicaragua, Israel and the Dominican Republic.
