Mets place catcher Josh Thole on 7-day DL; select catcher Rob Johnson’s contract

The New York Mets announced the club has placed catcher Josh Thole on the 7-Day Disabled List with a concussion and selected the contract of Rob Johnson from Buffalo (AAA) of the International League. Johnson will wear #16 and will be available for tonight’s game. Right-handed pitcher Pedro Beato was transferred to the 60-Day Disabled List to make room on the 40-man roster.

Johnson, 29, was hitting .291 (16-55) with 13 runs scored, three doubles, one triple, two home runs and seven RBI in 15 games with the Bisons.

Johnson spent the entire 2011 campaign with the San Diego Padres, batting .190 (34-179) with six doubles, one triple, three home runs and 16 RBI in 67 games.  He fashioned a 3.26 catchers ERA, the fifth-best among major league catchers with 50 or more starts.

The 6-1, 220-pounder batted .269 (7-26) with two doubles, one home run and three RBI in 16 games this spring with the Mets.
